Patch Examples & FAQ

Example:

Billy Bottomly joins the troop, signs up for its various pages and calendar, and reads the Scout Manual. He quickly realizes that he needs to decide how to wear his troop number patch — and that he needs a troop number patch! He looks over the badge catalog several times and participates in the forums a bit, then signs into the next online web meeting (monthly, 2nd Thursday). During the meeting, he declares, “I’ve been learning rope bondage here and there, I’d like to do more and earn a badge in it.” He also asks, “I notice that there’s no Personal Identity patch for Irishmen, and I’m as Irish as they come. There’s also no achievement badge for building your own computer, the project I just finished. Can we add those?”

The response to this would be threefold:

  1. “Yes, you sure can get started on the rope merit badge! Log your past practice and get signoff on it. And, do you have someone who can give you some coaching/mentoring on the topic for your interview, or should we find someone for you? Last, any ideas for what your project will be?”
  2. “Sure, we’ll put a placeholder in the Personal Identity patch section for now, for ‘Irish’. Please track down some patches that would represent that well, and send in the links. Buy whichever one you like best, of course, and sew it to your vest or sash, or wherever you’re adding patches.”
  3. “Sure, we’ll put a placeholder in the Achievement patch section for now, for ‘Custom-Built’. Please track down some patches that would represent that well, and send in the links. Buy whichever one you like best, of course, and sew it to your vest or sash, or wherever you’re adding patches.”
